CHAPTER FOUR

GERMAN IMMIGRATION POLICY THROES

Although the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been seen as a long-time defender of the rights of legal immigrants, migrants and refugees arriving not only in her country but in other countries of Europe including Austria, Hungary, Poland, Greece, Italy and Sweden. Essentially since 2015 she has fought and striven to show the face of European humanity which she said was the ‘soul’ of the entity but the unsettling rising tide of discrimination and fascism towards Africans and Middle Easterners coming into their borders is tending to create a situation where those in the German party known as Christian Social Union, the Bavarian allies in the Chancellor’s team to use this crisis as a reason to further their agenda of divisive politics, hate and bigotry against mostly young men and women who are fleeing war, hunger and persecution. Perhaps, she may want to reconsider the entire approach of a coalition government whether she wants to have these people sitting in her table as her allies who are fighting and resisting her policies and everything she has stood for, at a time the rest of Europe are reneging on such stance, the one she has held dear for some time now. Though, Germany has always faced migration issues and shouldered them due of their political will, financial and most of all, what experience has taught them, but since 2015, the tide has greatly shifted as in the recent years, more pressure has been mounted on her to take a tougher stance to curtail the migrant push towards her borders especially in Bavaria, a German state that have managed the migration properly but also where their stance are increasingly toughened on refugees and migrants. She has been in talks in many occasions not only with her fellow party, allies and opposition member parties but with other world leaders in Europe and America in order to get an aligned way of how to deal with this crisis, and this time may signal the end of her era, the Merkel era, though not sure, unless she totally plays into their political ‘game of thrones.’

Along with the President of France Emmanuel Macron, they are seen as the last Bastions of free movement not only among or within the European Union to counter the recent United Kingdom’s vote to secede from the greater European union for issues such as Migration of not just foreign migrants coming across the sea but also within the European Union. Therefore, she is seen as the last defender of the European liberal democracy amid the rise of populism across the Continent. Merkel, although not clear may be forced to make a U-turn on her open-door policy which has already been scaled back since Germany opened its borders to welcome around a million asylum seekers in 2015, which had according to estimates ten thousand people arrived daily in a population of eighty-two million people.

Her lenient refugee policy is blamed for a surge in support of the far right
